Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are Google’s metrics for measuring how user-friendly websites are in terms of loading times, interactivity, and visual stability.

What Are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals make it possible to measure how pleasant a website is for visitors in terms of load time, responsiveness, and visual stability.

Google measures three things:

How long it takes for the largest visible content to load.

How quickly a page responds to the first user interaction.

How much content shifts while loading.

Each metric is rated on a scale from “good” to “poor.” The results are factored into Google’s evaluation of a website.

Where did Core Web Vitals originate?

Google introduced Core Web Vitals in 2020 and made them an official ranking factor for its search engine in 2021. This move was part of a longer-term trend in which Google began placing greater emphasis on user experience. Page load speed had already been a factor, but with Core Web Vitals, it was defined more precisely and made measurable for the first time.

Why are Core Web Vitals important?

Slow and choppy pages have two problems. The longer a page takes to load, the greater the likelihood that visitors will bounce. Second, Google ranks such pages lower.

Core Web Vitals make aspects of the user experience objectively measurable and comparable, and can thus be used to inform data-driven optimizations.

Benefits

  • Core Web Vitals transform intangible impressions into concrete metrics.
  • Improving Core Web Vitals can lead to more satisfied customers and a better ranking from Google.
  • There are many free tools available to check your own metrics.

Challenges

While the metrics are easy to determine, optimization is often technical and usually not feasible without developer knowledge. Load speed often depends on image sizes, server configurations, program code, or the underlying system. For websites built on drag-and-drop or standard systems, some configuration options are not accessible at all.

Furthermore, improving Core Web Vitals is not a one-time task. Every new piece of content, every extension, and every integrated service can affect the metrics at any time.

Example

On a manufacturer’s website, text repeatedly shifts downward as images load later. As a result, visitors accidentally click on the wrong elements. Frustration mounts, and the corresponding Core Web Vital score suffers.
