Featured Snippet

A featured snippet is a highlighted answer box at the top of Google search results.

What Is a Featured Snippet?

A featured snippet appears as a framed, highlighted box that Google displays above the regular search results. It contains text, lists, or tables extracted from a website that provide users with a quick answer to their question.

Because of its often very prominent position, the featured snippet is also referred to as “Position Zero.” It usually appears for clearly phrased questions, such as those seeking definitions, step-by-step instructions, or comparisons. The content that makes it into a featured snippet is characterized by a clear structure and precise answers.

Where did the Featured Snippet originate?

As search habits changed and the use of specific questions increased, providing direct answers to search queries became more important. Google introduced Featured Snippets around 2014. In this way, the search engine aimed to provide direct answers to these questions. Thus, Featured Snippets can be seen as an early step toward directly answering search queries.

Why are Featured Snippets important?

Anyone whose content appears in a snippet is prominently displayed above many other results. Featured snippets are among the most visible unpaid elements in search results. In addition to visibility, “Position Zero” also conveys a strong sense of expertise and trust.

As a result, the source of the selected answer can appear particularly authoritative and trustworthy. From a business perspective, this presents significant opportunities for maximum visibility, especially for websites that do not rank among the top results in organic search, since Google selects featured snippets based on the relevance of an answer and not solely on its traditional position in the organic results.

Advantages

  • The Featured Snippet offers maximum visibility at the very top and can lend additional authority to the selected source.
  • It is also accessible to smaller websites because Google awards it based on the suitability of the answer and not solely on ranking.
  • A well-maintained glossary or a clearly structured guide are ideal formats for securing a featured snippet.

Challenges

Since a featured snippet displays the answer to a question directly, many users don’t click through—meaning they don’t visit the website. You can’t force Google to select your source for a snippet. However, you can increase your chances by using a clear structure and providing precise answers.

Furthermore, the position is not guaranteed: A competitor with a better answer can take over the snippet at any time. AI-generated answers are also increasingly changing the role of traditional featured snippets.

Example

A specialized company structures its guide on the question “How often do I need to inspect a fire extinguisher?” Immediately below that is the core answer in a clear, concise sentence. Google selects this paragraph as a featured snippet, so the company now appears at the very top for that query—even ahead of larger competitors that rank higher than the specialist company in the organic search results.
