Backlink

A backlink is a link on another website that leads to your own. Google can interpret such links as a signal of a page’s relevance and importance.

What does “backlink” mean?

A backlink is a link on another page that leads to your own. Search engines view such links as a sign of trust. After all, if someone links to another page, it must be worth something.

However, quality trumps quantity—it depends on who is linking to you. A thematically related and trustworthy source with editorial context carries more weight. Hundreds of links from a random directory, on the other hand, are worth significantly less. Such unnatural patterns can even harm your visibility.

Where does the backlink originate?

The basic idea comes from the world of science. The more often a scientific paper is cited, the more important and influential it is.

In the late 1990s, Google applied this principle to the web with the PageRank algorithm, named after co-founder Larry Page. As a result, links between websites became an important component of how websites are ranked.

Why are backlinks important?

Backlinks build trust. Anyone can write about themselves. References from third parties, on the other hand, are harder to obtain and are therefore a valuable signal.

Especially in competitive niches, this external trust can play a key role in achieving visibility in search results. Even the best content may lag behind weaker content without substantial backlinks.

Advantages

  • Backlinks have a long-term effect and continuously contribute to trust in the website.
  • They also bring in their own traffic—people who follow the link arrive with a recommendation behind them.

Challenges

Good backlinks can’t simply be bought; you have to earn them. This requires content that’s worth linking to.

Purchased links intended to manipulate rankings violate Google’s guidelines and can lead to ranking losses or manual actions. A clean backlink profile grows over the course of years, so patience is required.

Example

A plant manufacturer publishes a study on the energy efficiency of its machine class, complete with verifiable measurement data. Various trade magazines and an industry association pick up on the figures and link to the page containing the study.

In the following months, the website’s visibility in search results improves. The strong backlinks increase the study’s credibility and can also support the rest of the website through internal linking.
