Local SEO

Local SEO refers to search engine optimization that focuses on location-based searches.

What Does Local SEO Mean?

Local SEO, or local search engine optimization, involves strategies that make businesses visible in location-based search queries. For example, if someone searches for “SEO agency nearby” or “Asian takeout in Ulm,” businesses that have done their local SEO homework may appear in the results.

Searches conducted on the go can also lead to such results if the search engine takes the device’s location into account. Especially for these types of search queries, Google frequently displays local results, often accompanied by a map view and nearby businesses.

Among the most important components of local SEO are a well-maintained Google Business Profile, consistent business information across all directories, and locally relevant content on the website. These signals help the search engine associate a business with a specific region and relevant search queries.

Where did Local SEO originate?

Local SEO gained significant importance starting in the 2010s with the increasing prevalence of mobile searches and Google’s ability to factor in the searcher’s location. People were increasingly using smartphones to search for businesses, services, and hours of operation. Google responded by introducing local search results, prompting businesses to optimize their listings specifically for this purpose.

Why is local SEO important?

For businesses with a regional catchment area—such as skilled trades, medical practices, law firms, restaurants, and local service providers—general top rankings alone are not decisive. What matters most is being visible to people in their region who could actually become customers.

Local SEO focuses precisely on this regional visibility. Local searches are often linked to a specific need for action. Anyone searching for a provider “nearby” usually wants to get in touch or hire them soon. Being visible at that moment therefore has immediate business value.

Advantages

  • Local SEO reaches people with a strong intent to take action in the region relevant to the business.
  • Many of the key components—most notably the Google Business Profile—are free.
  • Competition is often more manageable at the local level than for general search terms, so significant results can be achieved even with a moderate amount of effort.

Challenges

Local SEO requires consistent maintenance across multiple channels. Even slight discrepancies in business information across different directories can make it difficult to clearly identify a business.

Reviews are important, but they cannot be fully controlled and therefore require a confident approach—even when dealing with criticism. In densely populated areas, local competition is often intense. Additionally, Google does not fully disclose the exact weightings of local ranking factors.

Example

A physical therapy practice isn’t appearing in search results for “physical therapy” or in local searches. The practice then optimizes its Google Business Profile, standardizes its addresses across all directories, and responds to patient reviews.

After implementing these measures, the practice’s local visibility improves, and it appears more frequently in the map view for relevant search queries. This helps attract new patients who were actually searching for a physical therapist nearby.
