Video Marketing

Video marketing is the strategy of using videos to achieve marketing and advertising goals.

What is video marketing?

Video marketing refers to the targeted use of videos to explain products, build trust, and attract attention.

These can include short clips on social media, product explainer videos, use cases, customer testimonials, behind-the-scenes glimpses, recordings of expert presentations, or product demonstrations. These videos can be shared on a company’s website, YouTube, social media, or in emails.

One of the strengths of video marketing is its ability to convey a lot of information clearly and concisely, especially in situations where text falls short. Moving images can demonstrate how something works, rather than just describing it. Additionally, a video conveys tone of voice, facial expressions, and atmosphere, which can foster a sense of connection and trust.

Where did video marketing originate?

Moving images have been used for advertising since the early days of cinema and television. Video became increasingly relevant for widespread use online with the launch of YouTube in 2005 and the advent of faster internet connections. With the rise of mobile devices and platforms like Instagram and TikTok, video eventually became one of the most important content formats of all.

Smaller businesses in particular have benefited from this, as video production has become increasingly accessible.

Why is video marketing important?

Some things are difficult to explain with text alone. Videos can illustrate these concepts clearly, capture attention in an environment that responds strongly to moving images, and spare people who don’t like to read the hassle of having to read vast amounts of text.

Precisely because videos can feature voices and faces, the format can convey a personal touch and foster trust.

At the same time, videos play a central role on many platforms and can achieve additional reach through high engagement and intense interaction.

Advantages

  • Video makes complex topics easy to understand.
  • It conveys a lot of information quickly, often more clearly than text.
  • Through voice and facial expressions, it can quickly foster a sense of connection and trust.
  • It attracts attention more easily in environments where video is prevalent.
  • On platforms heavily focused on video, videos can generate high levels of attention and additional reach.

Challenges

Good videos often require more effort than text—from concept to filming to editing—and therefore demand time, skill, and budget.

Videos can quickly lose their appeal, especially in fast-paced social media formats, and must be regularly reimagined and produced there. In the flood of videos, there must be a strong opening, which requires a creative idea, planning, and an understanding of the respective platform.

Example

A manufacturer of innovative packaging machines is having trouble explaining the benefits in text form. Even over the phone, employees struggle to clearly convey the benefits.

The company decides to produce a demonstration video that shows the machine in operation and highlights the key difference.

The video is placed in a LinkedIn ad and on the product page. Visitors now immediately understand the machine’s benefits.
