AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google’s AI-powered answers that can appear prominently within traditional search results.

What Are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated answers that appear directly in Google for many queries. To do this, Google uses generative systems to process information from various sources and creates a complete answer with links to relevant websites.

AI Overviews frequently appear for more complex knowledge-based and advisory questions—when Google determines that a summarized answer would be helpful—and less often for straightforward navigational searches, such as a company name.

For website operators, this represents a significant shift. Visibility is no longer determined solely by a site’s position in search results. Today, it’s also becoming increasingly important for a site’s content to appear as a source or additional link within AI-generated answers.

Where did AI Overviews originate?

Google began testing the format in the U.S. in 2023 under the name “Search Generative Experience.” The widespread rollout followed in 2024 under the current name “AI Overviews.” Since then, the format has been gradually rolled out in other countries.

This development coincided with a time when generative AI services like ChatGPT and Perplexity were fundamentally changing search behavior and establishing new ways of searching for information.

Why are AI Overviews important?

AI Overviews appear prominently in search results. Some searchers find the answer they need right there and no longer click through to a website. As a result, there can be a wider gap between visibility and actual website visits.

Consequently, the focus for website operators is broadening: in addition to traditional search rankings, being mentioned or linked within AI Overviews is also gaining importance. Those who appear in the answers as a source or further link can gain additional prominent visibility.

Advantages

  • The format opens up a new opportunity for prominent placement.
  • Helpful, reliable, and fact-based content creates a solid foundation for being included in AI Overviews. Those who are already creating such content stand to benefit twice over.

Challenges

Being linked to does not necessarily guarantee clicks. Some searchers are satisfied with the answer alone. As a result, visibility and traffic may not always align.

It’s now easier to track your own presence in AI Overviews via Google Search Console. However, the exact selection and weighting of sources remain only partially transparent and are subject to constant change. Companies are thus operating within a format whose rules are still evolving.

Example

A user searches for “How often should a ventilation system be maintained?” The AI Overview answers the question directly and links to three sources.

The specialized company whose guide is linked as a source thereby gains prominent visibility within the AI Overview—even if the user does not subsequently visit the website.
