GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

GEO is the optimization of websites and content for generative AI systems.

What does GEO mean?

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is the discipline of making content and brands visible in generative systems such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, or Gemini. In other words, the goal is to be found, mentioned, or linked to as a relevant source in AI responses. To achieve this, content is structured so that systems can find, understand, and classify it as a relevant source as effectively as possible.

Typical GEO measures include:

consistent company and brand information across various platforms,

clear, fact-based, and verifiable statements,

concrete answers to relevant technical questions,

unique content featuring genuine expert knowledge, and

a technically sound website that is accessible to search engines.

By the way, GEO has nothing to do with geography. The local targeting of advertisements is called geotargeting.

Where did GEO originate?

GEO emerged with the rise of generative AI systems—and ChatGPT in particular—beginning in late 2022. The discipline developed largely out of SEO, as many GEO measures are fundamental yet often neglected SEO practices. In 2023, the term “Generative Engine Optimization,” or GEO for short, was coined and systematically described in a scientific paper.

Why is GEO important?

Search behavior is increasingly shifting toward AI-powered answers. Traditional search primarily provided a selection of results that users had to sift through themselves. AI answers are changing the playing field: The system processes information from various sources and directly presents a summarized answer.

In this process, only a limited selection of sources and brands is prominently highlighted, and users often do not click on them. Those who do not appear here lose an additional opportunity for visibility. Those who appear as relevant sources, on the other hand, can establish a presence early in the research process.

Especially in B2B, AI systems are increasingly becoming part of the research process long before a provider is contacted. GEO helps ensure visibility right from the start of this early dialogue.

Benefits

  • GEO helps brands become visible in AI systems.
  • GEO opens up an additional form of visibility alongside traditional search results.
  • Much of what is done for GEO—clear content, substantiated claims, clean structures, and expert value—simultaneously strengthens traditional discoverability.

Challenges

AI systems are still relatively new and are evolving rapidly. What works today may change with new models, search systems, and display formats. Measurability also remains a challenge. While dedicated metrics for AI visibility are increasingly being developed, there is still a lack of uniform and fully reliable metrics across different systems.

When it comes to content, the core requirement remains the same: it must be easy for humans to read and understandable to machines—now including AI.

Since AI systems can consolidate information from various sources, consistent company and brand information also helps prevent contradictions and incorrect attributions.

Example

A machinery manufacturer publishes a detailed technical article on how often certain industrial gearboxes need to be serviced. The article specifies concrete service intervals, explains differences based on load and application, and backs up its claims with technical sources.

Later, a buyer asks an AI system: “What maintenance intervals are typical for industrial gearboxes in continuous operation?” The system draws on various sources and, in its response, also references the manufacturer’s technical article. This allows the machine manufacturer to reach the potential customer during the research phase—even before the customer begins actively searching for a supplier.
