E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T is a quality framework that Google uses to describe how to identify trustworthy and helpful content.

What does E-E-A-T mean?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. With this framework, Google describes the quality characteristics of content and answers the following questions:

Has the person writing the text experienced what they’re writing about firsthand?

Do they have a technical understanding of the subject matter?

Is the person or website considered an authority in the field?

Is the content trustworthy and does it include sources, verifiable information, and clear attribution?

E-E-A-T is not an isolated metric. Rather, it encompasses various quality signals that give the search engine an idea of whether the content is trustworthy or not.

Where does E-E-A-T originate?

The E-E-A-T quality concept stems from the guidelines used by Google-trained evaluators to assess websites and search results. Previously known as E-A-T, Google added the “E” for “Experience” in 2022 to better reflect personal and direct experiences.

With the proliferation of AI-generated text, the “Experience” aspect can also help distinguish content from purely generic text.

Why is E-E-A-T important?

When making important decisions, people—and search engines—prefer to rely on trustworthy sources rather than random opinions. E-E-A-T describes how to distinguish factually sound and trustworthy content from superficial content.

As a quality framework, E-E-A-T identifies where quality becomes apparent and provides clear guidelines for this—namely, by making it clear who is behind the content and what experience and expertise they bring to it.

Transparent sources, recognizable expertise, and clear authorship can also be helpful for visibility in AI-powered search systems.

Advantages

  • Strong E-E-A-T signals can support long-term visibility that is difficult to replicate—genuine experience and subject-matter authority are hard to fake.
  • Many of the signals that are relevant to Google also build trust with human readers.

Challenges

E-E-A-T is the result of long-term, credible work. Authority grows over the years and cannot be bought or activated at the push of a button, which makes progress difficult to quantify.

E-E-A-T requires showcasing genuine expertise and real-world experience, which means additional effort—especially for small businesses.

Example

A specialized building services company publishes a guide on heating system retrofits. The text includes the name and qualifications of the master craftsman who performed the work, features photos from real projects, cites sources for technical specifications, and links to the full legal notice.

The visible experience and expertise behind the publication provide Google and readers with important quality signals and create a better foundation for trust and visibility than comparable anonymous content.
